Wednesday, January 11, is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. In honor of this day (which I hope we soon don't have to commemorate), I want to tell you about my recent experience as part of an undercover operation in a large US city.  Our focus was Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST). These are minors (under 18) and US citizens. It was an eye-opening, two-day operation. Here's what I learned, in part from Giselle Rodriguez, state outreach coordinator for the Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking, who trained us, and in part from my own experiences on the street: 1. 19 Jan 2012 | 4:32 pm
Yesterday I was in a meeting with one of the detectives responsible for the arrests of 40 men this week in central Florida for attempting to buy children online. (You can read about the arrests in yesterday's post: If you buy children online, we will post your name online.) He spoke to us about internet crimes against children. I wanted to wash in Clorox after he finished. Here's what he told us: Of the 40 arrrested, only 1 was a registered sex offender. Two years ago in the same county where these 40 men were arrested, traffickers targeted 11 kids at a local karate school. Child traffickers…

This is Part 1 of a 2-part post. Yesterday the Sheriff's Office of Osceola County, Florida,  arrested 40 men for attempting to buy sex with children. The arrests include a swim coach, a professional golfer on the Senior PGA Tour, an 8th-grade teacher, business professionals, 8 college students, and many others. I just came from a meeting with one of the detectives involved in the sting and I'll report on that tomorrow. I'm still processing the mind-boggling information he shared. "Administer justice every morning and deliver the person who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor" (Jeremiah 21:12). Today is a national holiday in the US to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I wrote this post a few years ago about how he inspired me in my fight to stop child trafficking. Five decades ago, my sisters and I set up a little store in the playroom of our house in New York. When we invited our parents to come and shop (i.e. to spend their money), they were aghast to see the sign we had hung in our store: "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone." My parents…

Several years ago I posted an audio interview with Partrick Trueman on pornography, prostitution and child sex trafficking. I met Mr. Trueman, former Chief of the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Criminal Division, U. S. Department of Justice, face-to-face in Washington, D.C. for the taped interview. The stories he shared in that interview made a case for a clear connection between forced sexual slavery and the internet porn industry. Sometimes, however, words aren’t enough. It’s an honest look into the dark world of sexual slavery with an ending that drives home the reality of what keeps this practice alive and well, in places we’d never expect. I asked Daniel McCullum, what motivated him to make this film? “In the fall of 2009, I attended a presentation by the makers of the…

No form of child slavery is more defiling than child sex trafficking.  I find it difficult to understand how any reasonable human being could debate that point. Yet, apparently, The Village Voice is having a hard time understanding their role in supporting the trafficking of children for sex. Otherwise, it would not take 60,000 people to convince them to simply do the right thing and take every measure possible, not only to “ban” child sex trafficking ads from their Backpage.com platform, but assist authorities in helping identify and bringing to justice those placing the ads.

For the past three months I've been leading a new Love146 Task Force and it has been very eye-opening, to say the least. The group had our third meeting this past Wednesday, and spent some time talking about the various psychological warfare tactics that traffickers use to accomplish their goal. After the meeting I had a chance to catch up with a lovely girl who had just moved back to Hartford from Columbus, Ohio, where she had been involved with a ministry called Rahab's Hideaway. Even though I've been learning about child sex trafficking for years now, I was newly astounded at the depth and…

Human Trafficking Must End - Fight Sex Trafficking - Hope for the Sold

  • In Lieu of Wedding Favours, Help Hope for the Sold Fight Sex Trafficking!

Wedding planning is a crazy season, and for those of you getting married this summer, these next few months will be ones of busy preparation. Something that is becoming increasingly common is for the bride and groom to make a charitable donation on behalf of their guests instead of sending them home with a wedding favour.  On our wedding day, Jay and I decided to give the gift of water through Rwanda Clean Water and placed a bookmark shaped card in everyone’s water glass with some details. We recently had the honour of speaking at a spa and awareness event put together by Trade…

It was a warm, sunny Sunday in the early spring – the kind where you feel that summer is not just a cruel myth but is on the verge of melting through the grip of winter.  I remember curling onto the couch in my living room for a sun-soaked nap, completely unaware that I was about to be plunged into a winter season of the soul. The phone awoke me from my slumber.  My best friend Katharine had been in a car accident. Coach bus.  Airlifted.  Serious condition. Words became a jumble in my head.  Along with her family and closest friends, I spent the long, dark night at the hospital by…

  • Victory: Gildan Union Leaders in Haiti Rehired!

    USAS National
    24 Jan 2012 | 5:01 pm
Update: January 24, 2012… All your support paid off. Remember in November when I sent out an email about six Haitian garment workers making college apparel for Gildan and Hanes who had been blatantly fired after going public as leaders in a newly recognized union? Well, just earlier this month, the WRC issued a report announcing that all the fired union leaders from Gildan’s contractor, Genesis S.A., have been rehired. In Haiti, which has some of the poorest working standards and least regard for worker rights found anywhere in the world, this is quite remarkable. This is…

  • Watch USAS on ESPN, exposing Dallas Cowboys sweatshops!

Did you see us on ESPN exposing the Dallas Cowboys’ sweatshops in Cambodia? Sadly, my university continues to entertain a bid from the Cowboys to provide all of our college apparel. A company that abuses workers rights, violates our code of conduct, and lies about sweatshop use is not welcome at my university! Take action now to demand Ohio State President Gordon Gee stop moving forward on a 10-year deal with the Cowboys!  As a proud member of Buckeye Nation at the Ohio State University, I’m fighting our University’s corrupt bidding process which they’ve rigged in an attempt to…

You already know that 2011 has been an incredible year. But we think you’ll be blown away by this list of 11 incredible victories that USAS activists won alongside workers this year. Each of these 11 victories builds the power of workers’ unions and students. Next year, as we celebrate USAS’s 15th anniversary, we need to keep building students’ and workers’ power to defeat the challenges that corporations and the 1% pose to our democracy, our jobs and our education. Make it happen by contributing to USAS on the right-hand side of this page. Then share this page…

The decision is a major boost to a campaign by students across the US, UK and Canada in solidarity with Sodexo workers in the Dominican Republic facing a fierce crackdown from the company as they struggle against sweatshop conditions. A key victory for the international campaign to end Sodexo’s labor abuse in the…

A few days back, Paul and I were going to Child Care Home. On our way, the usual road was closed so we took another route. Suddenly we saw a dog lying on the road and growling in pain. We went near him and tried finding out what had happened. We could make out it was an accident. Unfortunately no one paid any heed to him. He tried moving but failed. I could see a group of people standing on the opposite side but they were more inquisitive to find about the foreigner with me rather than helping the dog. read more
