MANILA, the Philippines – On September 29, 2009, two child sex traffickers were sentenced to life imprisonment by a regional court for their crimes. That lovely thought is from the mouth of a human trafficker, talking about his victims. He mentions it a number of times in Lives For Sale,a documentary that traces the story of 2 young women who cross the US/Mexico border illegally and end up being trafficked--one in California and the other in Florida. Lives For Sale shows the strong connection between immigration and human trafficking, and why immigrants are willing to risk everything--even slavery--for the American dream. Many, of course, have no idea they are signing up to be slaves. Click here to watch the trailer.Human trafficking is…

How was your weekend? It was pretty good for 52 children who were rescued from prostitution all over the United States. The FBI conducted a 3-day undercover operation that rescued children in 36 cities around the U.S. Surprised? Don't be. “Child prostitution continues to be a significant problem in our country, as evidenced by the number of children rescued through the continued efforts of our crimes-against-children task forces,” notes Kevin Perkins, assistant director of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division.“These kids are victims,” adds Ernie Allen, president and CEO of the…

A few days ago, a high-school girl was put in prison for recruiting other girls for child trafficking.  It didn't happen in some far-off country, but in Phoenix, Arizona.Sadly, the only unusual part of this story is that she got caught. All over the US, this is happening in schools in your neighborhood and mine.Earlier this year, I wrote that child-trafficking recruiters are working in our MIDDLE schools.I tell people this over and over again, and I know they don't believe me. I've called investigative reporters to ask them to cover this, and can just about hear the yawns through the phone.

Job, and he is from India.  To give you an idea of the status of girls in India, this is the greeting given to a woman on her wedding day:  "May you be the mother of a hundred sons." In India, almost no one wants a daughter. Here are some of the tragic statistics that Dr. Job shared: 2,000 girls go missing in India--every day. 5,000,000 girls are…

A few years ago my daughters treated me to my first ever manicure. When I went to the nail salon, something seemed strangely wrong, but I had no idea what. Today I do. I was served by a hostile and unskilled young Asian woman, always under the watchful eye of an older woman who did all the speaking. Looking back, I feel almost sure the young woman was a modern day slave. But at the time, I didn’t know such a thing existed, so I didn’t know how to correctly interpret the suspicious signs. Victims of modern-day slavery may be found in legal, legitimate businesses, or in underground markets.

Posted by Adria Doll Last week, one girl came to work badly bruised and cut up. We learned that in the middle of the night she had been beaten up by a person in her household (she lives in a slum area) and had been kicked out of her house. The reasoning behind this abuse, as is common, was entirely illogical and a pitiful attempt to validate the idea that women are lesser and disposable. Naturally, the staff immediately arranged a safe place for her to stay until her turn on the waiting list for a working woman’s hostel comes up.Click to Read more

Some shocking articles crossed my computer like this one talking about the domestic magnitude of the issue and this one about a gang rape that occurred at a high school homecoming dance where over 20 people stood by, watched and did nothing.I have felt heavy and don’t have much to offer or say. Sometimes the only way we here at Love146 can come out from under the weight is to actively remember the people who are working towards justice and love, and be grateful! As WJ Cameron says,…
  • Evicted Children Get New Wheels

    28 Oct 2009 | 6:42 am
On Saturday we went to help distribute bikes for children who had been evicted from their slum in Phnom Penh to an area with few resources. The story of the eviction is very disturbing because it involved a company and the Government working together. Those who had papers were given some land but those who did not were left on the side of the road with nothing. My friend Sina (who worked with me in Site 2 refugee camp on the Thai-Cambodian border twenty years ago) asked me if we could help these particularly vulnerable evicted children to get to school by providing them with bikes. Getting to…
  • What if 2 Adult-White Males Were Trafficked Every Minute?

    22 Oct 2009 | 1:57 pm
Well, there would be a “war on trafficking” of course. It would be front-page news every day. The talking heads would not shut up about it. There would be “freedom concerts” and “tea parties” demanding action. There would be white-collar riots in the streets. The government would be forced to make the issue its number one priority. Criminal gangs making billions of dollars from the enslavement and exploitation of adult-white males would be hunted down and confronted without excuse or delay. Corporations linked in anyway to the modern-day slave trade would be shut down, their…

  • For runaways, sex buys survival

    Greg Russinger
ASHLAND, Ore. — She ran away from her group home in Medford, Ore., and spent weeks sleeping in parks and under bridges. Finally, Nicole Clark, 14 years old, grew so desperate that she accepted a young man’s offer of a place to stay. The price would come later. They had sex, and he soon became her boyfriend. Then one day he threatened to kick her out if she did not have sex with several of his friends in exchange for money. She agreed, fearing she had no choice. “Where was I going to go?” said Nicole, now 17 and living here, just down the Interstate from Medford. That first exchange of…

    Greg Russinger
The FBI says it rescued 52 children, one just 10 years old, from prostitution rings during nationwide raids that led to nearly 700 arrests. There were arrests in 36 cities after a surveillance operation of children sold for sex on the internet, on streets, in casinos and at truck stops. • Ten Dollars and a Bicycle for Love146

    2 Nov 2009 | 1:37 pm
Image by Georgios KaramanisThis is one of those posts that is going to get tagged "things that make me cry."You might remember me writing about a community we saw in Phnom Pehn that has been horribly mistreated by the government. They were stripped of their housing and whatever possessions they had and trucked off to a no-man's land beyond the airport, away from potential jobs, schools, and shelter. Many simply live under blue tarps and have no healthcare, privacy, sanitation or running water. I saw it with my own eyes, and it made me want to weep. Whenever I am lying in my warm bed when it…

  • Child Sex Trafficking of Runaways in the U.S.

    27 Oct 2009 | 1:28 pm
Photo by Sunny laid back L.A.I read a great article in the NYTimes today, and it was especially relevant on the heels of yesterday's big news. "For Runaways, Sex Buys Survival," looks at the business of trafficking runaways for sex on America's streets. It's a growing problem according to law enforcement and child protective service agencies, and the Internet plays a large part in attracting "clients."“It’s definitely worsening,” said Sgt. Kelley O’Connell, a detective who until this year ran the Boston Police Department’s human-trafficking unit, echoing a sentiment conveyed in…

Laura Kenney writes about a recent case of moder-day slavery for the StyleList. A West African immigrant has pleaded guilty to running a human trafficking operation that forced women to braid hair for up to 14 hours a day in Newark and East Orange NJ, reports the New Jersey Star Ledger. In a case prosecutors equated to modern day slavery, Lassissi Afolabi, 46, told a judge he headed a ring that smuggled victims from villages in Ghana and Togo. He brought twenty women, age 10 to 19, to New Jersey, where he seized their passports, forbade them to learn English and make friends, and planted them…

  • Speak Up to Stop Unfair Trade

Leo W. Gerard, the president of the United Steelworkers International has a piece on the HuffPo: In this struggle, it is crucial to understand that so-called free trade isn’t some lofty capitalist ideal. The U.S. engages in “free trade” with the Chinese because they hold $1 trillion in debt over our heads, an obligation they know we can’t pay. We shrink in fear of them. They’re world class bullies. They can do whatever they please. And they do. They violate international trade laws by which we abide. That’s why their stuff is so cheap. The one factor on…
